As one of the founding units of the Auxiliary in 1953, La Playa was comprised of members of a garden group who called themselves the Green Thumb Unit. Today, the La Playa Unit is the Auxiliary’s largest unit and draws its members primarily from the Point Loma area. The unit’s fundraising event, Celebration of Champions, raises funds for unique psychosocial programs at the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders that provide support to patients and families from the moment of diagnosis through their final treatment. During the event, the Champions, current and past childhood cancer patients , along with sponsors, family members, and local celebrities, perform an Olympic-style relay, passing the “Torch of Life.” Additionally a balloon ceremony is held to honor children who have passed on due to childhood cancer. The La Playa Unit meets on the third Friday morning of each month at a member’s home.
