Qualifications
Due to our extensive training and dedication to quality, we ask the following from our ADULT volunteer applicants:
- Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of the application. Please do not apply if you are under 18. We do not have a program for those under 18.
- Commit to a minimum of 100 hours of service over at least 12 consecutive months.
- Be available for one weekly 3-hour shift, on the same day and time.
Current Opportunities
Current volunteer opportunities change often. An accurate selection of shifts/departments will be made available one week prior to the live application. We are not onboarding volunteers in the Murrieta location (unless you are interested in the NICU). Thank you for your patience.
Please only apply if you are interested in the following departments and/or shifts we have available. Note which area you would like to volunteer in when submitting your application.
Shifts: Shifts range from Monday – Friday: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m, 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Located off campus in our Outpatient clinic. Volunteer will independently carry out assigned tasks under the auspices and supervision of staff. Assist with transporting patients to and from therapy, only as requested by therapist. Assists in maintaining a clean, neat treatment gym by cleaning mats. Clean and sanitize toys and other equipment. Empty linen bins as needed as well as re-stock. Copies, files in charts/pulls charts for therapist. Assists in cleanup of treatment area at completion of each session. Completes any special projects assigned by a therapist or OT Aide. Receives daily instruction and direction from designated staff.
Shifts: Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. or 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Located on the main campus. Volunteers support staff by preparing port kits and/or supply kits for nurses. Assists in delivering labs and blood products for clinical staff. Restock carts with medical supplies within the department. Cleans and sanitizes toys. Occasional beside visits when parents or staff can’t be present with the patient. Receives daily instruction and direction from the Child Life Specialist or designated staff.
Shifts: Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 9 a.m.-12 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday: 2 p.m.-5 p.m. Off Campus activities on Saturday and Sunday: 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
The Helen Bernardy Center for Medically Fragile Children is a skilled nursing and subacute facility for children and adolescents with multiple medical, physical and developmental delays. Volunteers will assist in activities that take place both inside and outside of the Helen Bernardy Center. Volunteers will enhance the experiences of our residents by engaging in fun, playful activities as well as providing enthusiasm, positive energy, companionship and valuable interactions.
Off-campus events include trips to the San Diego Zoo, the Wild Animal Park, SeaWorld, Mission Bay, Padres Games, the Del Mar Fairgrounds and the SkateWorld Roller Rink.

Medical Activity Room (General Medical)
PICU/ACU Pediatric (Intensive Care Unit/Acute Cardiac Unit)
Shifts: Monday – Sunday: 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m., 1:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m., 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
Located on our main campus. Volunteers offer direct focus to patients in support of their wellbeing and comfort by assisting patients, families and staff with diversionary play activities. Volunteers also provide one-on-one activities bedside or through facilitated play bedside or in the activity room. Volunteers will disinfect toys/activity room according to established procedures, maintain playroom supplies and assist with doing errands. Receives daily instruction and direction from the Child Life Specialist or designated staff.
Shifts: Shifts range from Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
To assist in the Early Intervention Programs for children with communication disorders, including speech, language, and hearing impairments. Helps within a group setting under direct supervision of staff. May assist in the preparation of materials for individual and group therapy. Activity occurs in the Speech, Hearing, and Neurosensory department at the San Diego Center or at satellite centers. Carries out group activities, with direct guidance from staff to stimulate communication development via various preschool-type activities. Assists staff in preparation and clean-up before and after group sessions and assists staff in preparation of activities/materials.
Shifts: Shifts range from Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
To serve as a liaison between parents and surgery staff to keep parents/guardians apprised of child’s status, monitors the waiting room to maintain a pleasant and orderly atmosphere and to assist families. Provides information about hospital environment and services to families of those who will be in-patients. Assists hospital visitors by providing directions. Greets families/guardians and visitors. Pre-registers patient into the computer system and directs them to the Registration Area, provides general information about hospital services, and directs vendors and other staff members throughout the unit.
HOW TO APPLY
- Our application was made available on September 9, 2024, and was closed on September 12, 2024. The next application can be accessed here at 10 a.m. on January 13, 2025.
- Application forms are processed in the order in which they are received.
- Completed application forms are reviewed by Volunteer Services staff.
- Volunteers selected for further consideration will be required to submit references and will be notified of the next steps in approximately 2 – 3 weeks.
- Volunteers are also required to have a background check submitted through RCHSD.
- As a Volunteer, you will be required to have a QuantiFERON TB test and drug screen administered at the RCHSD Occupational Health Office (Kearny Mesa campus) after your online interview. You will also be required to have the flu vaccination each year. If you are unable to take the vaccinations, we will be unable to onboard you as a volunteer.
