Qualifications
Due to our extensive training and dedication to quality, we ask the following from our ADULT volunteer applicants:
- Must at least 18 years of age at the time of the application.
- Commit to a minimum of 100 hours of service over at least 12 consecutive months.
- Be available for one weekly 3-hour shift, on the same day and time.

Shifts: Tuesday – Friday, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., 12:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m., 2:30-5:30 p.m.
Located off campus in our Outpatient clinic. Volunteer will independently carry out assigned tasks under the auspices and supervision of staff. Assist with transporting patients to and from therapy, only as requested by therapist. Assists in maintaining a clean, neat treatment gym by cleaning mats. Clean and sanitize toys and other equipment. Empty linen bins as needed as well as re-stock. Copies, files in charts/pulls charts for therapist. Assists in cleanup of treatment area at completion of each session. Completes any special projects assigned by a therapist or OT Aide. Receives daily instruction and direction from designated staff.
Shifts: Monday and Tuesday, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Located on campus in the hospital. Volunteer will independently carry out assigned tasks under the auspices and supervision of staff. Assist with transporting patients to and from therapy, only as requested by therapist. Assists in maintaining a clean, neat treatment gym by cleaning mats. Shifts: Monday, 12:00 p.m.-3:30p.m. Tuesday, 12:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m., Thursday, 12:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. and Friday, 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Located on the main campus. Volunteers support staff by preparing port kits and/or supply kits for nurses. Assists in delivering labs and blood products for clinical staff. Restock carts with medical supplies within the department. Cleans and sanitizes toys. Occasional beside visits when parents or staff can’t be present with the patient. Receives daily instruction and direction from the Child Life Specialist or designated staff.
Shifts: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, 5:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.
To assist staff with infant care, which add to the well-being and comfort of patients and families. Assembling NICU welcome folders/breastfeeding bags. Stock bedsides. When needed, provides comfort and care to babies under supervision of partner nurse by soothing, holding, and rocking infants. Provides comfort and companionship to babies and parents by providing socialization and developmental activities including use of infant seats, swings, mobiles, and toys. Receives daily instruction and direction from designated staff.
3 East (Surgical & Rehabilitation) Activity Room
Shifts: Monday-Friday, 1:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
Located on our main campus. Volunteers offer direct focus to patients in support of their wellbeing and comfort by assisting patients, families and staff with diversionary play activities. Volunteers also provide one-on-one activities bedside or through facilitated play bedside or in the activity room in 4 East and 3 East. Volunteers will disinfect toys/activity room according to established procedures, maintain playroom supplies and assist with doing errands. Receives daily instruction and direction from the Child Life Specialist or designated staff.
Shifts: Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-12 p.m. or 3 p.m.- 5 p.m. (Preferably two shifts per week)
Alexa’s PLAYC (Playful Learning Academy for Young Children) is an early education program offered through Rady Children’s Hospital’s Autism Discovery Institute. Alexa’s PLAYC welcomes children ages 18 months to 5 years old. The unique inclusion program is designed to integrate early education for typically developing children and children with autism spectrum disorder, providing young children with enriched learning experiences in the context of a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment. Volunteers will assist Alexa’s PLAYC staff in preparing teaching materials, engaging with toddler and preschool age children in the classroom and outdoor playground and assisting with administrative duties as needed.
HOW TO APPLY

- Completed application forms are reviewed by Volunteer Services staff.
- Volunteers selected for further consideration will be required to submit references and a background check submitted through RCHSD. Prospective volunteers will be notified of the next steps in approximately 2 – 3 weeks.
- Volunteers are also required to have a background check submitted through RCHSD, QuantiFERON TB test, proof of current immunizations (including COVID vaccine and applicable boosters), drug screen and online orientation prior to starting their first day. More detailed information will be provided at the online interview.
